Is Southeast Asia ready for its expected eCommerce growth?

According to an infographic from PFS Web, many of the countries that form the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) are set for strong eCommerce growth in the coming years.

 

It lists the top six Southeast Asia (SEA) markets as Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.

 

When it comes to making payments in the SEA region, many shoppers are reluctant to share details online – in fact, credit card usage is just emerging in many markets, with up to 70-80% of citizens currently ‘unbanked’. In Thailand for example, just one in ten have a credit card.

 

PFS Web identify four key obstacles that need to be overcome in SEA:

  • Lack of broadband access
  • Lack of trust in eCommerce
  • Lack of a solid logistics infrastructure
  • Lack of legislative harmonization of the region
